Frequently Asked Questions

Great question! To register click here and fill in the form. You will be asked to pay an amount through the system.  That amount is what is due to Scouting America directly for one year of Scouting. The Pack dues are a separate fee and will be sent to you via our treasurer.

Pack 551 is rated as a Gold level Pack in Scouting America’s Journey to Excellence system. What that means is that we are providing the highest level of programming available!

Scouting’s Journey to Excellence is a planning, performance, and recognition program. Its goal is to align performance to maximize results in areas that are directly related to producing a successful, growing, and sustainable Scouting program. It is a tri-level recognition program, with Bronze – Effective, Silver – Excellent, and Gold – Exceptional.

Pack 551 has been awarded Gold in the Journey to Excellence Program for the years 2020 to 2023. We are on track to receive it for 2024 in December 2024.

For more information see: Journey to Excellence

Yes, we have STEM programming. Our Pack will be hosting the Alvarez and Townes Supernova programs on Zoom starting October 2022. This amazing STEM program is for Wolf – Webelos 2 Scouts (2nd-5th grade).

Yes! We are a 100% volunteer run Pack. We expect each family to participate in the Pack in some form, although it doesn’t need to be at every event.

Every family is asked to lead one adventure for their child’s den. Your den leader will explain the process to you.

There are also many opportunities to help such as crafts at pack nights, setup and cleanup for pack nights, committee positions and den leader positions. We need your skills and expertise to keep us running.

The den leader sets the schedule. Typically, a Scout would attend two den meetings (one is a meeting, one is an outing) and one pack event a month. A total of three events. Each event lasts about one hour.

There are many Pack events, STEM events and outings which we do. Those are optional.

Yes, our Pack is active all year round. We participate in programs all summer to help our Scouts achieve their National Summertime Pack Awards. In the summer we go to summer day camp, go to summer resident camp, go hiking, go on outings/field trips, and do conservation work. If there is something your family is interested in doing, let us know and we can set up the event!

Absolutely! We are a family Pack and all of our dens are open to all genders. The dens are based on grade level. Lion den = kindergarten. Tiger den = 1st grade. Wolf den = 2nd grade. Bear den = 3rd grade. Webelos den = 4th grade. Arrow of Light den = 5th grade.

Anytime during the year! We have two main join events however your Scout can join anytime. Our first join event is in September; if you join during that event your Scout won’t miss any of the yearly programming. The second join event is in March. Your Scout can join in on the remaining scheduled programming for March, April, May and June plus be involved with the fun summer Pack activities!

Scouts registering after May 1, 2024 pay Scouting America an annual fee of $85.  When paying this fee you will also have the option to purchase a year subscription to Scout Life magazine for $15.  Pack 551 dues are $130 per school year (September 1st to August 31st).  Totaling $230 or $215 without a Scout Life magazine subscription.

For a new Scout, the uniform will cost around $75.  While wearing the uniform is not mandatory, it is highly encouraged.  The uniform helps to create a sense of belonging.  Also a scout’s achievements can be recognized by the insignia worn on the uniform.  We wear the official Scout button up uniform shirt, Chief Seattle Council shoulder patch, numerals 551 and a belt which are available at the Scout Shop or the Seattle Trading Post.

Limited scholarships are available on an as-need basis.

Scouting is all about new experiences. The den leader will set the schedule for hiking outings. As a Pack we attend overnight winter camp, summer day camp, and one pack overnight campout a year.

Don’t know anything about hiking or camping? No problem. We will teach you and your Scout.

Yes, your family may join any Pack you wish. Our Pack has kids from 5 schools, including home school, in our Pack. In 2022 McAuliffe Pack joined our Pack. Please check out your school’s Pack as well (if there is one).

We have a larger sized Pack with amazing programming. We have 52 kids in our Pack, 5 dens, 4 den chiefs, and 18 registered adult leaders. All of our registered adult leaders are current with their position training and Youth Protection Training.

The den meeting is an important bonding time for the Scout and parent and it is easiest without distractions. Please have a conversation with your den leader. Some den leaders allow siblings and some are not able to accommodate siblings. If a sibling is disruptive or unable to sit quietly then you may need to find childcare arrangements.

No, we are a family scouting unit and require one adult to stay per Scout. Each meeting is a fantastic bonding experience and we have noticed that Scouts are excited about their parent/guardian participating with them.
